School Resource Officer

The Clarkston Police Department’s School Resource Officer (SRO) program, in cooperation with the Clarkston School District, was implemented in 1999. The program involved the assignment of a police officer to the Clarkston School District’s seven schools on a full time basis. The Clarkston School District averages 2,600 students K-12 in a school year. The SRO program is a nationally accepted program that places law enforcement within educational environments.

The SRO is a police officer who has received special training to assist in the implementation of the SRO program into the schools. The philosophy of the SRO program is to fulfill three different roles to achieve the desired outcome. Teacher, Counselor, and Law Enforcement Officer. The SRO’s first duty is that of a sworn police officer, investigating crimes and activities associated with criminal behavior. The SRO is not the school disciplinarian or campus police, but rather “police on campus” who promote a positive image through interaction with students, parents, teachers, and administrators.

With a high profile presence in the schools, the SRO is easily recognizable and is an approachable resource for students. Daily law enforcement contact with students has improved relationships. The SRO regularly attends school athletic events and other school sponsored functions. The SRO also functions as a guest speaker as well as a teacher in the classroom, covering such issues as drug abuse, laws, and other related topics.

Patrol officers appreciate the SRO program as it has reduced the number of patrol responses to the schools.

A critical element of the SRO program is the relationship between the SRO, the school administration, and the school staff. Information exchange is vital and includes discussion of current crime trends, problem areas, cultural conflicts, or any other area of concern that may cause disruption at the school or in the community.

Funding for the SRO program is provided by the Clarkston School District. Together, the Clarkston Police Department and Clarkston School District have enjoyed a positive partnership working with the youth in our community. The program has truly been successful and all involved wonder how we did without it.

The Clarkston police officer assigned as SRO to the Clarkston schools is Officer Josh Daniel. Officer Daniel has been with the Clarkston Police Department for six years and the 2006-2007 school year will mark his third year as SRO for the Clarkston schools. Officer Daniel’s office is located at Clarkston High School.

If you have any questions or would like any further information about the School Resource Officer’s responsibilities, please contact Officer Daniel:
